Mito HollyHock — Academy
Founded in 1994 and a J.League member since 2000, this Ibaraki club develops players through its Youth, Junior Youth and Junior teams under the “Mito Ishin” philosophy — and a pathway to the first team.
Mito HollyHock, founded in 1994 as “FC Mito” and a J.League member since 2000, is a professional club based in Ibaraki Prefecture. Its academy is built around a Youth (U-18), Junior Youth (U-15) and Junior (U-12) structure plus a wider school (grassroots) program, all guided by the club’s “Mito Ishin” philosophy of developing people, the club and the city together. To date, ten academy graduates have been promoted to the first team.
Club overview
Mito HollyHock is a professional football club based in Mito, the capital of Ibaraki Prefecture, with a home-town area spanning a wide range of municipalities across the prefecture. The club was founded in 1994 as “FC Mito” and joined the J.League in 2000, and has long competed in J2.
Alongside its first team, the club has invested in a locally rooted academy. That academy serves two purposes at once: supplying players to the first team, and giving young people across the region a place to grow.
Academy structure
Mito HollyHock’s academy is organised into the following age-group categories. In every one, players compete as a single team that reaches beyond individual schools.
| Category | Age group | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Youth | U-18 (high-school age) | The top category, bringing together players from the club’s Junior Youth, local junior-high schools and other clubs into one squad. |
| Junior Youth | U-15 (junior-high age) | Formed from players promoted from Junior level or who pass selection trials meeting set standards. |
| Junior | U-12 (elementary age) | The foundation category for elementary-school-age players. |
| School | Kindergarten to elementary | A separate grassroots program open to a wider range of children. |
The official site notes that entry to Junior Youth requires meeting certain standards, such as promotion from Junior level or passing a selection trial. League affiliations, competitions, training venues and schedules vary by season, so confirm the latest details on the club’s official academy pages.
Development philosophy
At the heart of the academy’s philosophy is the club-wide slogan “Mito Ishin” — “people develop, the club develops, Mito develops” — the idea that an individual player’s growth feeds the growth of the club and, in turn, the city.
The club sets out three guiding perspectives for development:
- Goal-oriented self-realisation — setting and pursuing goals across football, school and future career.
- The individual within the group (society) — engaging proactively within a team and society, and building social maturity while growing.
- The development years as a learning period — treating this stage as a time to raise “human strength,” not only technical skill.
Under these principles, the academy aims to develop both “heart” (kokoro) and “body” (karada) — a foundation for the whole person, not just the footballer.
Notable graduates & pathway
A central role of any academy is building a clear pathway to the first team. At Mito HollyHock, ten academy graduates have been promoted to the first team over the club’s history.
Goalkeeper 上山海翔, whose first-team promotion was announced in September 2025, is counted as the tenth such academy-to-first-team graduate — and, according to the club, the first goalkeeper in its history to make that step up from the academy. The ninth was 内田優晟.

This flow — from the academy to the professional stage and beyond — is a shared theme across J.League academies, which you can compare in the J.League academy directory.

Honours
For an academy, “achievement” is measured not only in trophies but in how many players it lifts to the next stage. Mito HollyHock’s academy points to its record of ten graduates promoted to the first team as one measure of its development work.
Competition results and titles for each category vary by season; check the club’s official academy news for the latest standings and results.
For players & parents
Key points for players and parents:
- Junior Youth (U-15): entry requires either promotion from Junior level or passing a selection trial that meets set standards. Trials are held each year and announced on the official site.
- School: a grassroots program for kindergarten- to elementary-age children, separate from the competitive teams.
- Visits & enquiries: whether training can be observed, and how to apply, varies by period — follow the academy’s official guidance.
Recruitment details, trial dates, venues and fees can change. Always confirm the latest information on the official academy pages and official social accounts.
