FC Machida Zelvia Youth Academy — Academy
From Machida's grassroots roots to J1, FC Machida Zelvia's academy pursues beautiful, creative football. A full profile.
FC Machida Zelvia‘s youth academy is based in Machida, Tokyo, and runs a full pyramid of Youth (U-18), Junior Youth (U-15, U-14, U-13) and Junior (U-12, U-11) teams alongside a football school. The club traces its roots to “FC Machida,” a boys’ football selection team founded in 1977; its senior side won the J2 title in 2023 and reached J1 for the first time in 2024. At youth level, the Youth team won the U-18 Tokyo T1 League for the first time in 2025 and secured promotion to the Kanto Prince League Division 2. Built on a long amateur and grassroots tradition, its professional academy is still relatively young, with players such as Yoshitaka Aoki and Hiromu Mayaka-Chui progressing from the academy into the professional game.
Club overview
FC Machida Zelvia grew out of “FC Machida,” a boys’ football selection team formed in 1977. A senior amateur side, “FC Machida Top,” was established in 1989 and renamed FC Machida Zelvia in 1997. The club climbed step by step from Tokyo’s lower divisions through the Kanto League and JFL into the J.League, completing the rare journey from the lowest prefectural tier all the way to J1. In 2018, CyberAgent joined the club’s management, strengthening both the first team and the youth setup.
The senior team won the J2 League in 2023 and earned promotion to J1 for the first time in club history in 2024, then made a striking impact by finishing among the top sides in its debut top-flight campaign. The club plays at Machida GION Stadium in the Nozuta district of Machida, nicknamed the “Sky Castle.” In step with the first team’s rapid rise, the academy has also been steadily expanded.

Academy structure
The Zelvia Academy forms an integrated development pyramid: Youth (U-18) at high-school age, Junior Youth (U-15, U-14, U-13) at junior-high age, and Junior (U-11, U-12) at elementary age, with a large-membership football school at its base. The Junior U-11 and U-12 sides were established around 2021-2022, only recently completing a seamless pathway from childhood through to the first team.
| Category | Age group | Main leagues / competitions |
|---|---|---|
| Youth | U-18 | Prince Takamado U-18 Tokyo T1 League / Kanto Prince League, Club Youth Championship |
| Junior Youth | U-13 to U-15 | Kanto and Tokyo junior-high leagues, Prince Takamado U-15, Club Youth Championship |
| Junior | U-11 and U-12 | Tokyo and Machida-area boys’ football leagues and tournaments |
The academy trains at the Miwa Midoriyama Base, opened in 2022, keeping the first team and youth in close proximity. The club-run “ZELVIA KITCHEN” also supports players’ physical development by providing nutritionally balanced meals after training under the supervision of a registered dietitian.
Development philosophy
The academy’s central principle is the pursuit of beautiful, creative football. Building on values passed down since the club’s earliest days, it aims to develop players who not only chase victory but can express proactive, imaginative play that captivates spectators. Alongside technical and tactical education, great emphasis is placed on each player’s ability to make their own decisions and express themselves on the pitch.
The operating body also frames its mission around learning to challenge oneself, to persevere, and to communicate with teammates through sport, thereby building a foundation as a person. In this sense the academy serves a dual purpose: the competitive goal of producing professional footballers, and the developmental goal of helping local children grow as individuals. This duality reflects a development philosophy distinctive to Machida, a club rooted in grassroots boys’ football.
Notable graduates & pathway
Players build fundamentals at Junior level, then rise through Junior Youth and Youth as they raise their competitive level, ultimately aiming to reach the first team. A second-team registration system allows promising high-schoolers to appear for the first team while still at school, giving them early exposure to the professional environment. Yoshitaka Aoki became a second-team registered player in his final year of high school before returning to the club after university, while Hiromu Mayaka-Chui developed all the way from the school’s special class and was promoted directly from the Youth team to the first team in 2025.

Some players reach the professional ranks via university football or other clubs, so the route from academy to first team is not a single straight line. For comparison with other J.League academies, see also SportsPulse Global — Football.
Honours
At youth level, the standout honour is the Youth team’s first-ever title in the 2025 Prince Takamado JFA U-18 Tokyo T1 League (won on 16 November 2025 with a 2-0 victory over Kokushikan High School). That result took them into the promotion play-off for the Kanto Prince League Division 2, and they secured promotion to Division 2 for the 2026 season. For a young professional academy, this represents steady progress.
Among the first team’s honours, the 2023 J2 League title and the resulting first-ever promotion to J1 in 2024 stand out. The club competed near the top of the table in its debut J1 season, and its very journey from the lowest prefectural tier to the summit of Japanese football is itself a major achievement.
For players & parents
The academy is operated within the framework of the “Machida Zelvia Sports Club,” centred on the NPO Athletic Club Machida, working in partnership with the professional side FC Machida Zelvia to develop local talent. CyberAgent has been involved in the first team’s management since 2018, and the club improved its facilities by opening the Miwa Midoriyama Base, complete with a walking trail, in 2022.
The home ground is Machida GION Stadium in the Nozuta district of Machida, where the club operates as a community-rooted institution. In addition to the first team, a second side, “Zweite,” competes in a Tokyo amateur league, providing competitive matches to bridge the gap between Youth and the first team. From a boys’ football selection team, through the school, academy, second team and first team, everything is connected under a single development structure — a defining feature of this club.
