Shimizu S-Pulse — Academy
A club that embodies football-mad Shizuoka. Running teams from U-18 down to U-12 across Shimizu and Mishima, its 'independence'-driven academy produced Japan international Koya Kitagawa among others.
The Shimizu S-Pulse academy runs Youth (U-18), Junior Youth (U-15) and U-12 teams across two hubs, Shimizu and Mishima. Its guiding idea is independence — as a footballer and as a person. It has produced many professionals, led by Japan international striker Koya Kitagawa, and won the Japan Club Youth Championship (U-18) in 2002. It is an emblem of football-loving Shizuoka.
Club overview
Shimizu S-Pulse are one of the J.League’s founding ‘Original 10’ clubs (established 1991, competing from the 1993 launch). They play at IAI Stadium Nihondaira (the former Nihondaira Stadium, capacity around 19,600) and are based in Shimizu-ku, Shizuoka City.
Shizuoka has long been known as a heartland of Japanese football, and S-Pulse stand as its symbol, deeply tied to the region’s development culture. Having started as a citizens’ club without a single corporate parent, they place special value on the lineage of homegrown players who go on to carry the first team. The academy sits at the centre of that mission, building on Shizuoka’s rich playing population.
The first team is known as a side that contested many titles in the early J.League era, backed by Shizuoka’s fervent supporters. Having begun as a citizens’ club without a single corporate parent, its attachment to homegrown players is especially strong, and academy graduates thriving in the first team are a source of great pride for club and fans alike.
Academy structure
The academy fields age-group teams across the Shimizu and Mishima areas. The main structure is as follows.
| Category | Age / class |
|---|---|
| Youth | U-18 |
| Junior Youth | U-15 |
| Junior Youth Mishima | U-15, Mishima area |
| U-12 Shimizu / U-12 Mishima | U-12 |
It also operates soccer schools across the region and a dance school. Training centres on the Suzuyo Miho Ground in Shimizu-ku, and a dormitory (the Seiichishiki dorm) houses out-of-prefecture Youth players and young first-teamers. The twin Shimizu and Mishima bases let the club take in promising players from across Shizuoka.
Club development in Japan runs within the JFA’s age-group league and cup pyramid. At U-18 level the nationwide Prince Takamado Trophy JFA U-18 Premier League sits at the top, with regional Prince Leagues and prefectural leagues below. Prince League Tokai, the main stage for S-Pulse Youth, is the region’s upper league gathering the Tokai area’s strongest sides. Shizuoka has a large playing population and a high-standard prefectural league, so young players get plenty of quality competition.

Development philosophy
What the S-Pulse academy values most is independence — as a footballer and as a human being. It seeks to combine competition with cooperation and self-initiative with self-discipline, developing players who can think and decide for themselves.
On the pitch that means choosing your own actions; off it, it means governing your own life. Binding those two together — a stance that echoes Shizuoka’s development culture — is rooted throughout the club. This emphasis on the human foundation, not just technique and tactics, helps explain why so many graduates survive long careers in the professional game.
A development model built on ‘independence’ asks players to think and act for themselves rather than wait for instructions. Beyond on-pitch decision-making, dormitory life and balancing study cultivate self-management off the pitch too. Rooted in Shizuoka’s development culture, this character formation raises the all-round quality that technique alone cannot measure and supports a long career.
Notable graduates & pathway
The academy’s standard-bearer is striker Koya Kitagawa, who rose from the Youth team to the first team, played in Europe and earned Japan (SAMURAI BLUE) selection. Others to graduate include Shun Nagasawa, defender Tomoya Inukai and goalkeeper Togo Umeda.

The Youth team competes mainly in the Prince Takamado Trophy JFA U-18 Prince League Tokai and the Shizuoka Prefectural League, chasing a place at the national Japan Club Youth Championship (U-18). Fuller graduate and roster details are on the SportsPulse Global — Football hub and the club’s development pages. Note the Youth team’s tier (Premier vs Prince) can change season to season.
As Koya Kitagawa exemplifies, the S-Pulse academy has been a stage for producing local stars. Players who rise from Youth to the first team and on to the national team or abroad are a tangible goal for Shizuoka’s children and lift the whole region’s development motivation. Even for those who do not reach the first team, a route to the professional game via university is widely open.
Honours
The signature title is the 2002 Japan Club Youth Championship (U-18), won by S-Pulse Youth. They were runners-up the following year (2003) and finished third in 1999, a record placing them among the country’s strongest youth sides.
They have continued to contend near the top of Prince League Tokai and various age-group competitions. Individual seasons and titles are listed on the club’s official academy results pages.
For players & parents
The ways in are the selection trials for each Shimizu and Mishima category and the soccer schools around the prefecture. Children typically build the basics at a school, pass a trial and progress to Junior Youth and then Youth; the dormitory makes it possible to aim for the academy from outside Shizuoka too.
Recruitment details, trial dates and fees change year to year, so always check the latest information on the official site.
Each academy category is a narrow gate with limited places, but the dormitory for out-of-prefecture players makes it easier to attempt from beyond Shizuoka. The sure first step toward moving up is simply to play continuously at a local school and build the basics and good habits.
