Nagoya Grampus — Academy
An 'Original 10' J.League club rooted in the Toyota Motor football team. With two U-15 sides at Toyota and Mizuho plus a Youth team, its academy — which produced Maya Yoshida and Haruya Fujii — is a regular winner of national age-group titles.
The Nagoya Grampus academy is anchored by a Youth (U-18) side, two U-15 teams at Toyota and Mizuho, and a U-12. The U-18 competes in the Prince Takamado Trophy JFA U-18 Premier League WEST, and the academy has developed Japan internationals such as Maya Yoshida and Haruya Fujii. A regular winner of national U-18 and U-15 titles, it is based at the Toyota Sports Center.
Club overview
Nagoya Grampus trace their roots to the Toyota Motor football team founded in 1939 and are one of the J.League’s ‘Original 10’ from the 1993 launch. Their home area covers all of Aichi Prefecture, centred on the cities of Nagoya, Toyota and Miyoshi, and they play at Toyota Stadium (capacity around 45,000, opened 2001) and Paloma Mizuho Stadium.
With a major manufacturer in their history, the club has built an unusually well-resourced development setup. Because the first team is based at the Toyota Sports Center and the academy uses the same facility, young players are exposed to a top-class environment from an early age — a significant advantage. In recent years the club has expanded the academy further, launching a new U-15 team in 2025.
The first team has carved out a history as a consistent challenger, winning its first J1 League title in 2010. Backed by excellent facilities and financial strength, the club can offer a top-class environment to its youth ranks too — a significant advantage over rivals. With the Toyota Sports Center as a shared base, the first team and the academy are closely linked.

Academy structure
The academy is organised by age band and, in 2025, expanded to a two-base U-15 model. The main structure is as follows.
| Category | Age band | Main base |
|---|---|---|
| Youth | U-18 | Toyota Sports Center |
| U-15 Toyota | U-15 | Toyota Sports Center |
| U-15 Mizuho | U-15 (new in 2025) | Paloma Mizuho Sports Park |
| U-12 | U-12 | — |
The new U-15 Mizuho team, launched in 2025, was created by converting the existing ‘Grampus Miyoshi FC’ school side into an academy team, giving the club two Junior Youth sides alongside the Toyota-based U-15. Broadening its intake across the Nagoya and Toyota areas opens the door to more promising players. Specific U-15 league divisions should be confirmed on the official site.
Club development in Japan runs within the JFA’s age-group league and cup pyramid. At U-18 the nationwide Prince Takamado Trophy JFA U-18 Premier League (East and West) sits at the top, with regional Prince Leagues and prefectural leagues below. The Premier League WEST, where the Grampus Youth play, is the summit stage for western Japan’s strongest sides. At U-15, national competitions such as the Takamado Cup All-Japan U-15 and the Japan Club Youth Championship (U-15) are also in place, and Grampus have piled up national titles at both age groups.
Development philosophy
The club’s development vision is to become ‘the most trusted academy and club in Japan’ and to drive change in youth development. Its mission is to provide the highest-quality environment in which children build independence and character through football.
The guiding pillars are character formation, the pursuit of excellence and self-improvement, contribution to the community, enjoyment of the game, and acting with initiative and autonomy. Notably, it states clear goals: to develop players who can compete with the world and represent Japan, and players who can excel at the professional top level. A well-resourced environment paired with a clear philosophy underpins this celebrated academy.
Aspiring to be ‘the most trusted academy in Japan,’ the club values not just winning but building an environment where children develop independence and character. The pursuit of excellence, community contribution, a love of the game and acting on one’s own initiative — these pillars express a determination to develop players as people, not only as competitors. Setting clear goals for both world-class and top-level professional players is a distinguishing feature.
Notable graduates & pathway
The academy’s greatest success story is defender Maya Yoshida, who rose from U-15 through the Youth team to the first team and enjoyed a long career on the world stage and with Japan. More recently Haruya Fujii — who climbed the full ladder from Grampus Miyoshi through U-12, U-15 and U-18 to the first team and made his Japan debut in 2024 — has become a new emblem. Others such as Ryota Isomura and Daiki Mitsui have also been promoted from the academy.

Players like Maya Yoshida and Haruya Fujii — developed consistently from the youth ranks, through the first team, all the way to the Japan national side — symbolise the quality of Grampus’s development. Fujii’s case in particular, walking every step from the Miyoshi school through U-12, U-15 and U-18, is a ‘pure-bred’ success that shows the ideal of integrated coaching. Such successes become goals for the next generation, creating a virtuous cycle.
Honours
The Nagoya Grampus academy boasts a rich record of national age-group titles. Per the official results page, the main championships include:
U-18: J.League Youth Championship winners in 2011 and 2019; Japan Club Youth Championship (U-18) winners in 2021.
U-15: Takamado Cup All-Japan U-15 winners in 1999, 2010 and 2025; Japan Club Youth Championship (U-15) winners in 2008 and 2019.
Repeated national titles across multiple age groups attest to the quality and consistency of the development programme. The latest results are on the club’s official academy pages.
For players & parents
The routes in are the selection trials for the Youth and U-15 teams and the schools the club runs across the region. Centred on Nagoya, Toyota and Miyoshi, the typical path is to build the basics at a school, pass a trial and progress into the academy.
Recruitment details, trial dates, eligible year groups and fees change annually, so always check the latest information on the official site.
The academy is a narrow gate with limited places in each category. As with the 2025 expansion of the U-15 to two bases, the club keeps working to widen its intake. The sure preparation for passing a trial is to play continuously at a local school and build the basics first.
