Avispa Fukuoka — Academy
The academy that raised Takehiro Tomiyasu — a database of Avispa Fukuoka's youth structure, philosophy, graduates and schools.
Avispa Fukuoka’s academy runs U-12, U-15 and U-18 sides alongside a broad network of soccer schools across Fukuoka, under the slogan “Dreams and inspiration for children!” The U-18 competes in the top-tier Takamado-no-miya JFA U-18 Premier League WEST, and the academy’s standout graduate is Takehiro Tomiyasu, of Arsenal and the Japan national team.
Club overview
Avispa Fukuoka is a J1 club based in Fukuoka City. Its academy, based at Gannosu, coaches players from U-12 to U-18 and supplies talent to the first team. In Fukuoka, Kyushu’s largest city, it plays a dual role: widening participation in the game and developing players capable of competing at the top.
Alongside its competitive youth teams, the club runs soccer schools across Fukuoka — in Hakata, Shima, Munakata, Kurume and elsewhere — offering a variety of programmes including futsal, goalkeeping and adult sessions. Running competitive teams and schools in tandem, it broadens the base and develops players at the same time.

Academy structure
The academy comprises three age-group categories and a broad school network.
| Category | Team / main league |
|---|---|
| U-18 (Youth) | Avispa Fukuoka U-18 / Takamado-no-miya JFA U-18 Premier League WEST (top national tier) |
| U-15 (Junior Youth) | Avispa Fukuoka U-15 / JFA U-15 (Kyushu); All-Japan U-15 Championship |
| U-12 (Junior) | Avispa Fukuoka U-12 / regional leagues |
| School | Soccer schools across Fukuoka (including futsal, goalkeeper and adult programmes) |
The U-18 (Youth) is the top high-school-age category, competing in the top tier of the Takamado-no-miya JFA U-18 league system, the Premier League WEST, against the country’s strongest sides. The U-15 (Junior Youth) plays mainly in the Kyushu JFA U-15 competitions and the All-Japan U-15 Championship, and the U-12 (Junior) covers elementary age.
The main base is the Gannosu Recreation Center in Higashi-ku, Fukuoka City, which is also the first team’s training site — a strength for consistent development, as first-team and youth players work in the same environment. League divisions and venues change over time, so confirm the latest on the official site.
Development philosophy
Avispa Fukuoka’s academy and schools carry the slogan “Dreams and inspiration for children!” The phrase reflects a commitment not only to competitive teams but to creating environments where many more children can experience the joy of football.
The U-18 programme emphasises intensity in duels, a competitive will to win and team unity, aiming to maximise development opportunities at Japan’s highest U-18 level. Fostering each player’s growth within a demanding competitive environment is in line with the modern development thinking shared by many J-club academies. For the formal wording of the full development philosophy, see the academy and school pages on the official site.
Notable graduates & pathway
The academy’s standout graduate is Takehiro Tomiyasu, who joined the junior youth at age 12, came through the ranks and made his first-team debut in 2015 before moving to Bologna and Arsenal and becoming a mainstay of the Japan national team. His journey from a regional club’s academy to the top of the world game symbolises Avispa’s development ability.

Other names — such as Yoshiaki Tanaka, Atsushi Suzuki and Shunsuke Tsutsumi — are associated with Avispa’s youth/academy, though some joined from outside high schools, so confirm the exact origins officially; distinguishing academy graduates from other players matters for an accurate database. For other clubs’ academies, see the SportsPulse Global — Football hub.
Honours
Stand-alone national youth titles that could be independently confirmed are limited, but as a development highlight, the side from Tomiyasu’s era competed at the 2013 JFA Premier Cup, where he was named to the Best Eleven.
A high-school-age side’s national standing is usually measured by its results in the league pyramid crowned by the Takamado-no-miya competitions (Premier → Prince → prefectural) and by the summer Club Youth Championship. For the fullest, most current record, see the official site.
For players & parents
Avispa Fukuoka’s academy comprises competitive youth teams and a varied network of soccer schools across Fukuoka. In general, joining a J-club’s youth teams (U-12, U-15, U-18) requires passing a selection (trial), typically held at a set time each year for the following season, while soccer schools are usually run on a more open basis for a wider range of ages and levels.
Selection dates, eligible age groups, school venues, application methods and fees can change from year to year. For the latest and most accurate application details, fees and venues, please check the official site.
