Kyoto Sanga F.C. — Academy
A club with more than a century of history, descended from the Kyoto Shiko Club. Based at Sanga Town Joyo, its academy aims to 'develop world-class players' and has produced Japan international Yuya Kubo.
The Kyoto Sanga F.C. academy develops U-18, U-15 (including a SETA branch in Shiga) and U-12 teams at its well-appointed base, Sanga Town Joyo. Its stated aim is to ‘develop world-class players who compete on the global stage.’ It has produced many players, led by Japan international striker Yuya Kubo, and won the J-Youth Cup in 2017.
Club overview
Kyoto Sanga F.C. are a club with more than a century of history, descended from the Kyoto Shiko Club founded in 1922. They play at Sanga Stadium by Kyocera in Kameoka, Kyoto Prefecture (capacity around 21,600) and are based in Kyoto.
The club has invested heavily in its development environment. Its training and academy base, Sanga Town Joyo (the Higashi-Joyo ground) in Joyo City, was relocated and opened here in 1998, and an artificial-grass pitch completed in 2006 is used by the youth teams. Having the youth age groups work on the same site as the first team is a strong stimulus for young players. This blend of long history and modern facilities is the foundation of Kyoto Sanga’s development.
The first team has won memorable silverware, including the Emperor’s Cup in 2002. As a club with more than a century of history, it is deeply rooted in the region, and by building a modern stadium and development base it has married tradition with modernity. Consistent activity at Sanga Town Joyo creates an environment in which youth-age players feel high goals within reach.
Academy structure
The academy is organised by age band and also runs a U-15 branch in the Shiga area. The main structure is as follows.
| Category | Detail |
|---|---|
| U-18 (Youth) | The academy’s top, high-school age group |
| U-15 (Junior Youth) | The core junior-high age team |
| U-15 SETA Shiga | A branch in the Shiga area (its own site) |
| U-12 (Junior) | Selection programmes SP / SSP (roughly U-9 to U-12) |
It also runs tiered soccer schools and a cheer school. The development hub is Sanga Town Joyo, where youth teams mainly use the 2006 artificial-grass pitch. The SETA branch in Shiga opens the door to promising players from outside Kyoto. Specific U-15 and U-12 league divisions should be confirmed on the official site.
Club development in Japan runs within the JFA’s age-group league and cup pyramid. At U-18 the nationwide Prince Takamado Trophy JFA U-18 Premier League sits at the top, with regional Prince Leagues and prefectural leagues below. Prince League Kansai, where Sanga’s U-18 play, is the region’s upper league of Kansai’s strongest sides, and promotion to the Premier League above is a goal. The summer Japan Club Youth Championship is also an important national stage for youth-age players.

Development philosophy
The Kyoto Sanga academy sets a clear mission: to develop world-class footballers who compete on the global stage. Underlying it is an emphasis on growth both as a player and as a person.
A distinctive feature is the Scholar Athlete Project (SAP), an industry–academia development framework. By developing players while balancing academics and football, it reflects Kyoto Sanga’s aim to nurture well-rounded people rather than focusing on competition alone. Development toward a world standard, combined with a character formation that includes education, shapes the academy’s philosophy.
Behind the ‘world-standard’ philosophy lies the Scholar Athlete Project (SAP), which balances academics and football. Rather than leaning solely on competition, this effort broadens horizons through learning and builds a human foundation, helping players look ahead to a long life that includes life after retirement. Valuing character formation on the ground while aiming at the world characterises Kyoto Sanga’s development philosophy.
Notable graduates & pathway
The academy’s standard-bearer is striker Yuya Kubo, a Japan (SAMURAI BLUE) international who has said ‘my foundation is the Sanga youth team’ — an embodiment of the club’s development. Others to graduate to the professional game include Europe-based Masaya Okugawa, goalkeeper Daichi Sugimoto and Sora Hiraga.

The U-18 team competes mainly in the Prince Takamado Trophy JFA U-18 Prince League Kansai, chasing promotion to the Premier League above it. Fuller graduate and roster details are on the SportsPulse Global — Football hub and the club’s official academy pages. Note that Park Ji-sung and Daisuke Matsui were first-team players, not academy graduates.
As Yuya Kubo has said that ‘my foundation is the Sanga youth team,’ the Kyoto Sanga academy has been the starting point of players’ careers. The path from Youth to the first team and on to overseas football or the national side is a clear role model for those who follow. Even without promotion to the first team, many players aim for the professional game via university, so the grounding built in the academy pays off along varied routes.
Honours
Among the academy’s main titles, the official results page lists the 2017 J-Youth Cup (J.League Youth Championship) and the 2023 Prince League Kansai Division 1 championship. The academy has a record of contending near the top at both national and regional level.
Because results and titles vary by season, the latest information should be confirmed on the club’s official academy pages.
For players & parents
The ways in are the selection trials for the U-18 and U-15 categories and the tiered soccer schools. Children typically build the basics at a school or through the junior selection programmes (SP / SSP), then pass a trial to move up; the SETA branch in Shiga makes it possible to aim for the academy from outside Kyoto.
Recruitment details, trial dates and fees change year to year, so always check the latest information on the official site.
Each academy category is a narrow gate with limited places. Entry points that let players develop step by step are available — the SETA branch in Shiga, the SP/SSP selection programmes for U-9 to U-12, and tiered schools. The first step is to be in an environment offering continuous play and to build the basics and good habits.
