Sanfrecce Hiroshima — Academy
Sanfrecce Hiroshima, Japan's archetypal develop-and-produce club — its structure, residential system, philosophy and famous graduates.
Sanfrecce Hiroshima runs one of the J.League’s most celebrated academies, a self-described “develop-and-produce” club. An early adopter of a full residential (dormitory) system, it has produced numerous Japan internationals — Yuichi Komano, Ryota Moriwaki, Tomoaki Makino and Yosuke Kashiwagi — and in 2012 became the first academy in Japanese history to have four of its graduates appear together for the senior national team.
Club overview
Sanfrecce Hiroshima is a J1 club based in Hiroshima, and its academy is one of the most respected in Japanese football. Guided by the principle of teaching through football rather than teaching football itself, it is renowned for combining on-pitch quality with personal development. Its record of producing Japan internationals has led it to be described, at times, as the country’s best academy.
The pathway runs from the Youth (U-18) through Junior Youth (U-15), Junior (U-12/U-10) and soccer schools, and the club also fields the women’s Regina Youth and Junior Youth sides. Based in Aki-Takata City, its model of developing players in close partnership with the local community is widely known as one of the J.League’s benchmark development setups.

Academy structure
The academy comprises boys’ and girls’ age-group teams across several sites in Hiroshima Prefecture.
| Category | Team / main league |
|---|---|
| U-18 (Youth) | Sanfrecce Hiroshima F.C Youth / Takamado-no-miya JFA U-18 Premier League WEST (top national tier); Prince League Chugoku below it |

The U-18 (Youth) is the top high-school-age category, playing in the top tier of the Takamado-no-miya JFA U-18 league system, the Premier League WEST, with Prince League Chugoku below it. The U-15 (Junior Youth) competes in JFA U-15 competitions and the Chugoku Progress League, and the U-12 / U-10 (Junior) covers elementary age. The women’s Regina sides at Youth and Junior Youth level extend the club’s development work to the women’s game.
The main base is the complex centred on Aki-Takata City Soccer Park in Yoshida, Aki-Takata City, with additional grounds in Fuchu Town and Hiroshima City. Leagues and venues change over time, so confirm the latest on the official site.
Development philosophy
Sanfrecce Hiroshima’s development philosophy is to “cultivate rich humanity through football and build the foundations of a good member of society.” As its motto — teaching through football rather than teaching football — suggests, personal formation is paramount.
Another guiding phrase is “be a first-class member of society before a first-class footballer.” An early pioneer of the full residential system, the club has coaches living in the dormitory alongside players, providing guidance in daily life as well as football. Youth players attend a local high school, balancing academics with the game, and the club supports the education and careers of players who do not turn professional. This is why it positions itself as a “develop-and-produce” club. For the exact wording of the philosophy, see the official site.
Notable graduates & pathway
Sanfrecce Hiroshima’s academy has continuously produced Japan internationals. Symbolically, on 24 February 2012 against Iceland, four graduates of the same academy — Yuichi Komano, Ryota Moriwaki, Tomoaki Makino and Yosuke Kashiwagi — appeared together for the national team, a first in Japanese football history. At J-clubs, promising academy players often experience first-team football as “Type-2” players while still in high school, and Hiroshima has long sent talent into competitive matches early. The following are confirmed academy graduates.

- Yuichi Komano, Ryota Moriwaki, Tomoaki Makino, Yosuke Kashiwagi — all Japan internationals.
- Yojiro Takahagi, Shun Kawabe, Taketo Notsuda, Shunsuke Maeda and others.
Few academies in Japan have produced so many internationals from a single setup, a testament to Hiroshima’s development strength. For other clubs’ academies, see the SportsPulse Global — Football hub.
Honours
At youth level, the U-18 won the Japan Club Youth Championship (U-18) in 2003 and 2004 and were runners-up in 2013. The U-15 won the Japan Club Youth Championship (U-15) in 2018 and were runners-up at the All-Japan U-15 Championship in 2022 — a national-class record at both levels.
The academy also has a rich history in the Takamado-no-miya Premier League and in international youth tournaments and tours, but year-by-year titles change over time, so confirm the details on the official site and JFA records.
For players & parents
Sanfrecce Hiroshima’s academy comprises age-group teams for aspiring professionals and soccer schools for a wider range of children. A defining feature is the residential Youth setup, which supports players — including those from further afield — in daily life as well as football. In general, joining a J-club’s youth teams requires passing a selection (trial), typically held at a set time each year for the following season.
Selection dates, school venues, dormitory and partner-high-school details, and fees can change from year to year. For the latest and most accurate application details and venues, please check the official site.
