Vissel Kobe's academy, built to develop players who lead Japan and shine globally — structure, philosophy, graduates and pathway.

The quick version

Vissel Kobe’s academy coaches players from elementary through high-school age under the mission of developing “human-rich players who lead Japan and perform globally.” The U-18 competes in the top-tier Takamado-no-miya JFA U-18 Premier League WEST. It has produced homegrown players such as Yuki Kobayashi and Daiki Sasaki, and is known for its development environment, including the “Mikitani House” dormitory.

Club overview

Vissel Kobe is a J1 club based in Kobe, Hyogo. Its academy, based at Ibuki-no-Mori, coaches players systematically from elementary to high-school age and supplies talent to the first team. While the first team has drawn attention for signing world stars, the club has also invested in building an academy that develops its own players.

From 2019 to 2025 the club held a partnership with FC Barcelona, which is reported to have introduced new methods to its development work (confirm details officially). Across all age groups the academy pursues a possession-based style that controls games and takes aggressive actions in both attack and defence, so that players can perform with a consistent approach as they rise through the categories. This continuity from first team to academy underpins the club’s development work.

Academy structure

The academy is organised by age group, with two U-15 sides — the main team and Itami.

Category Team / main league
U-18 (Youth) Vissel Kobe U-18 / Takamado-no-miya JFA U-18 Premier League WEST (top national tier)
U-15 (Junior Youth) Vissel Kobe U-15, Vissel Kobe Itami U-15 / JFA U-15 Kansai; Club Youth Championship (U-15)
U-12 (Junior) Vissel Kobe U-12 / regional U-12 competitions
School Vissel Kobe Soccer School (multiple sites)

The U-18 (Youth) plays in the top tier of the Takamado-no-miya JFA U-18 league system, the Premier League WEST, facing the country’s strongest sides on a regular basis. The U-15 (Junior Youth) fields both a main team and Itami, giving more players a high-level development opportunity. The U-12 (Junior) covers elementary age, where the foundations of technique and decision-making are built.

The main base is Ibuki-no-Mori in Nishi-ku, Kobe, alongside the first-team training ground. The Mikitani House dormitory, opened in 2009, serves as a centre for personal development through communal living and dining, supporting players — including those from further afield — off the pitch as well as on it. Leagues and venues change by season, so confirm the latest on the official site.

Development philosophy

Vissel Kobe’s academy is built around developing “human-rich players who lead Japan and perform globally.” It works on three pillars: consistent coaching from elementary to high-school age; widening the base through weekend clinics and school programmes; and coach development.

On the pitch, all age groups share a possession-based approach and aggressive actions in attack and defence. The U-18 focuses on team tactics, speed and power, and independent individuals; the U-15 on group tactics and understanding the whole game; the U-12 on enjoyment, basic skills and good habits. Beyond football, the academy emphasises developing “human-rich players” with social skills and independence — a modern approach that combines on-pitch quality with character formation. For the exact wording of the philosophy and coaching staff, see the official site.

Notable graduates & pathway

The academy has produced homegrown players now featuring for the first team and beyond. At J-clubs, promising academy players often experience first-team football as “Type-2” or special-designated players while still in high school before turning professional. The following are confirmed academy graduates.

  • Yuki Kobayashi — a centre-back promoted from the U-18, who has since played in Europe including with Celtic.
  • Daiki Sasaki — won the Premier League WEST with the U-18 before a 2018 first-team promotion; a homegrown attacker.
  • Yutaro Oda — a youth-product winger who has played for Shonan Bellmare and others.
  • Taiya Maekawa — an academy-raised goalkeeper who has been called up to the Japan national team.

Note that Kyogo Furuhashi starred for Vissel’s first team but joined via university and is not an academy product; distinguishing academy graduates from other players matters for an accurate database. For other clubs’ academies, see the SportsPulse Global — Football hub.

Honours

At youth level, Vissel Kobe U-18 won the 2017 Takamado-no-miya JFA U-18 Premier League WEST. A high-school-age side’s national standing is usually measured by results in the league pyramid crowned by the Takamado-no-miya competitions (Premier → Prince → prefectural) and by the summer Club Youth Championship.

National titles at U-15 and U-12 level are updated over time, so the fullest, most current record is best confirmed on the official site and JFA records.

For players & parents

Vissel Kobe’s academy runs both competitive teams and broader soccer schools, so that many children can enjoy the game. In general, joining a J-club’s youth teams (U-12, U-15, U-18) requires passing a selection (trial), typically held at a set time each year for the following season, while soccer schools are usually run on a more open basis for a wider range of ages and levels.

Selection dates, school venues, application methods and fees can change from year to year. For the latest and most accurate application details, fees and venues, please check the official site.
