The quick version

The Ibaraki Robots are a B.League club from Mito, Ibaraki. Founded in 2013 as the Tsukuba Robots — named for the robotics and science associated with Tsukuba Science City — they relocated to Mito and rebranded around Ibaraki Prefecture. They play at the modern Adastria Mito Arena (opened 2019), reached the top division, and in December 2024 were granted a B.LEAGUE PREMIER licence for 2026–27 by meeting the attendance, revenue and arena standards.

2. A science-city origin

The club began in 2013 as the Tsukuba Robots, taking its name from the robotics and research for which Tsukuba Science City is famous worldwide. It later moved its base to Mito and rebranded around the wider prefecture, but kept the distinctive “Robots” identity — a rare tech-themed name in Japanese sport.1

3. New home, top tier

Ibaraki’s rise has been quick. They reached the top flight, moved into the Adastria Mito Arena (a 5,000-capacity venue opened in 2019 with modern audio-visual fit-out), and in December 2024 were granted a B.LEAGUE PREMIER licence for 2026–27 after meeting the league’s attendance, revenue and arena criteria.2 For a club barely a decade old, it’s rapid progress. ⚠ Confirm their current standing.

4. Why they matter

  • They’re a fast riser. Top-division status within a decade of founding.
  • They have a modern identity. A robotics-themed name from Japan’s science city.
  • They invested in a home. A modern arena that helped secure top-tier status.
