Utsunomiya Brex: The B.League’s Winningest Club
Utsunomiya Brex: The B.League’s Winningest Club
If the Chiba Jets are the B.League’s biggest brand, the Utsunomiya Brex are its biggest winners. The very first champions, multiple-time title-holders, and now champions of Asia — and long the home of Japan’s NBA pioneer.
The Utsunomiya Brex, from Tochigi just north of Tokyo, are the most successful club in B.League history. They were the league’s first-ever champions in 2017, won again in 2022, and added a third title in 2025 to become the winningest club — then capped it by winning the Basketball Champions League Asia in 2025. They’re also long associated with Yuta Tabuse, the first Japanese player in the NBA. Quietly, they’re the standard everyone else is chasing.

1. Who the Brex are
2. A record of winning
3. The Tabuse connection
4. Why they matter
1. Who the Brex are
The quiet winners of Japanese basketball.
Founded in 2007 (originally as Tochigi Brex), the Utsunomiya Brex represent Tochigi Prefecture, north of Tokyo. They don’t have the Jets’ commercial scale or the Golden Kings’ island fervour — what they have is trophies. More than any other club, the Brex have made winning their identity.1
2. A record of winning
The Brex’s honours make the case on their own:
| Year | Achievement |
|---|---|
| 2017 | The first-ever B.League champions — beat the Kawasaki Brave Thunders 85–79 |
| 2022 | B.League champions — swept the Ryukyu Golden Kings 2–0 (after a 50–10 season) |
| 2025 | A third B.League title — the winningest club in league history |
| 2025 | Champions of the Basketball Champions League Asia |
Three domestic crowns plus a continental title is a record no other B.League club can match. ⚠ Totals grow with each season — check the latest.1
3. The Tabuse connection
For much of his long career, the Brex were home to Yuta Tabuse — the first Japanese player to appear in the NBA. His presence helped make Utsunomiya a model professional club, and ties the team directly to the story of Japan’s celebrated little guards. (More on that in Why Japan Develops Guards.)1

- They’re the benchmark. The most decorated club in B.League history.
- They’re champions of Asia. Proof Japanese clubs can win continentally.
