By SportsPulse Editorial Team|Updated June 18, 2026|Editorial reviewEditorial policy ›

The quick version

Japan’s men have appeared at every World Cup since their 1998 debut — eight tournaments and counting. Their best result is the Round of 16, reached four times (2002 as co-hosts, 2010, 2018 and 2022). The 2022 run was especially memorable, with group-stage wins over Germany and Spain before a penalty defeat to Croatia. The quarter-finals remain the next frontier. ⚠ Squads and future results change — check the latest.

1. The big picture

Asia’s great World Cup regular, still chasing the last eight.

Japan have grown from newcomers into a side feared by major nations.1 Organised, fast and fearless, the Samurai Blue have become a fixture of the knockout rounds — even if the quarter-finals have so far eluded them.

Japan debuted at France 1998, losing all three games — though Masashi Nakayama scored their first World Cup goal.1 They reached the Round of 16 as co-hosts in 2002, then again in 2010. In 2018 they led Belgium 2–0 before losing 3–2 in one of the tournament’s great comebacks — an agonising near miss.

3. The 2022 statement

At Qatar 2022, Japan stunned the world by beating Germany and Spain to top their group, before falling to Croatia on penalties in the Round of 16.1 It confirmed Japan as a genuine threat to the established order — and set the stage for their bid to finally reach the quarter-finals.
