Ball-Handling Drills for Young Basketball Players
Ball-Handling Drills for Young Basketball Players
Great guards start with great hands. Here are simple ball-handling drills to build control and confidence in young basketball players.
Ball-handling is the foundation of guard play and the skill that gives young players confidence to do everything else. The good news: it can be practised almost anywhere. Here are simple drills to build control.
1. Both hands
Build a weak hand.
From the start, young players should dribble with both hands. A strong weak hand is what separates good ball-handlers — part of why Japan develops guards well.
2. Control over speed
Master it slowly.
Control comes before speed. Slow, controlled dribbling with fingertips — not slapping with the palm — builds the feel that fast handling needs.
3. Eyes up
See the game.
Encouraging children to dribble with their eyes up, not on the ball, develops the court awareness great guards rely on.
4. Practise anywhere
A ball and a little space.
Stationary dribbling drills need almost no space, making them perfect for home practice between sessions.
