Getting Started in Karting: A Parent’s Guide
Getting Started in Karting: A Parent’s Guide
Karting is where most racing drivers begin — often around age 5. A practical guide to starting a child in youth motorsport, by age and step.
Almost every professional racing driver started in a kart — and many began very young. If your child is fascinated by motorsport, here is a practical guide to getting started in karting: when, how, and what to expect.
1. What age to start
Often around five.
Many tracks offer “kid kart” classes from around age 5–7 with smaller, slower karts built for beginners; competitive (“Cadet”) racing typically starts from about age 8.1 Tracks set their own age, height and weight rules for safety.1
2. The steps up
From fun laps to racing.
The path usually runs from arrive-and-drive sessions (renting at a track) to kid karts, then Cadet categories and beyond. Starting with rentals lets a family test interest before investing in a kart.
3. Safety and cost
Plan realistically.
Karting requires a helmet and safety gear, and costs rise quickly once a family owns and races a kart. Begin with track rentals and proper supervision; treat early sessions as fun, not a results chase.
4. The pathway
Where it can lead.
Karting is the foundation of the racing ladder that leads, for a tiny few, toward formats explored in our F1 & motorsport hub. For almost everyone, it is simply a thrilling way for a child to fall in love with motorsport. Always follow each track’s safety rules and supervision requirements.
