The quick version

Karate — literally “empty hand” — was born in Okinawa and made its long-awaited Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020. On home soil, Ryo Kiyuna won Japan’s first Olympic karate gold in men’s kata. Yet despite the sport’s Japanese roots, the eight golds were shared by eight different nations — and karate was then dropped from the 2024 and 2028 programmes. This guide explains the sport and Japan’s place in it.

1. Okinawan origins

A Japanese martial art with global reach.

Karate means “empty hand” and emerged in Okinawa centuries ago before spreading across Japan and the world.1 Today tens of millions practise it globally, making it one of Japan’s most successful cultural exports alongside judo.

2. Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020

Home soil, mixed fortunes.

Karate finally entered the Olympics at Tokyo 2020. Ryo Kiyuna won Japan’s first Olympic karate gold in men’s kata, while Kiyou Shimizu took silver in women’s kata behind Spain’s Sandra Sanchez.2 Remarkably, all eight gold medals went to eight different nations — and the sport was not retained for Paris 2024 or LA 2028.2

3. Kata vs kumite

Two very different contests.

Olympic karate had eight events: two kata (one each for men and women) judged on a solo demonstration of form, and six kumite (three weight categories per sex) — full sparring scored on controlled strikes.2

4. Why it matters

A homegrown art on the world stage.

Karate’s Olympic moment showcased a Japanese martial art globally, even if the medals spread worldwide. It sits within Japan’s deep martial-arts and sporting tradition — a culture of discipline that runs through everything from kendo to the dojo etiquette covered across our guides.
