The quick version

Sumo’s ranking system (banzuke) is central to the sport — a strict hierarchy that every wrestler climbs or slides down. Here is a clear guide to the ranks.

1. The top division

Makuuchi.

The elite top division is makuuchi, where the sport’s stars compete — below it sit several lower divisions wrestlers climb through.

2. Yokozuna

The grand champion.

At the very top is yokozuna, the grand champion — a rank of immense prestige held by legends like Chiyonofuji and Akebono.

3. The titled ranks

Ozeki and below.

Below yokozuna come the titled ranks — ozeki, sekiwake, komusubi — then the rank-and-file maegashira.

4. Rising and falling

Earned every tournament.

Ranks are revised after each tournament based on results, so a wrestler’s standing constantly evolves — except yokozuna, who are never demoted.
