Motorsport Jargon Explained for Beginners
Motorsport Jargon Explained for Beginners
Pole position, DRS, undercut, parc fermé — motorsport is full of jargon. Here is a beginner’s glossary to help new fans follow along.
Few sports throw as much jargon at newcomers as motorsport. Commentators rattle off terms that can leave new fans lost. Here is a friendly beginner’s glossary of the most common motorsport terms.
1. Around the grid
The basics.
Pole position is starting first; the grid is the starting order; parc fermé is the controlled area where cars are checked — all set during the race weekend.
2. Strategy terms
The chess game.
The undercut (pitting earlier to gain track position), stint (a run on one set of tyres) and pit window are the language of race strategy.
3. On-track terms
Racing action.
DRS aids overtaking; slipstream (or tow) is following closely for a speed boost; lap time measures pace.
4. Don’t sweat it
It comes with time.
No one learns all the jargon at once. Grasp the basics and the vocabulary sinks in naturally, race by race.
