Super GT, Explained: Japan’s Best Sportscar Racing
Super GT, Explained: Japan’s Best Sportscar Racing
Two classes on track at once, factory Hondas, Toyotas and Nissans shared by two drivers, and a weight handicap that punishes winning — Super GT is one of the most competitive GT championships on earth, and unlike anything in Europe or America.
Super GT is Japan’s top sportscar championship — two classes racing together: GT500 (fast factory cars from Toyota, Honda and Nissan) and the larger GT300 (GT3 cars plus Japanese specials). Each car is shared by two drivers with a mid-race change, and a unique “success ballast” adds weight to the cars that are winning — keeping the field absurdly close. The 2026 season runs 7 rounds, all in Japan. ⚠ The catch: watching it abroad is genuinely hard right now.

1. What Super GT is
Imagine two different championships sharing one track at the same time — that’s the basic spectacle.
Super GT is Japan’s premier sportscar series, run by the GT Association. Two classes race simultaneously: the fast GT500 top class and the slower, bigger GT300. The GT500 cars must constantly carve through GT300 traffic, and managing that — for both classes — is a core skill. It descends from the 1990s JGTC and was rebranded Super GT in 2005; it’s widely rated one of the best-attended and most competitive GT series in the world.1
2. GT500 — the top class
GT500 features bespoke silhouette racers — they look like road cars but are purpose-built ~650 hp machines (derived from the now-defunct international “Class 1” rules). Three Japanese manufacturers field works teams, and each car is shared by two drivers who swap during a mid-race pit stop:2
| Manufacturer | 2026 car | Cars |
|---|---|---|
| Toyota | GR Supra | 5 |
| Honda | Prelude-GT (new for 2026) | 5 |
| Nissan | Z (Nismo) | 3 |
⚠ 2026 update: Honda replaced the Civic Type R-GT with the new Prelude-GT, and Nissan trimmed to three cars — so the GT500 grid is about 13 cars, not the ~15 of recent years.2
3. GT300 — the wild card
GT300 is the larger, more varied class (~29 cars). It mixes two very different kinds of machine:
- FIA GT3 cars — the global customer racers you’ll recognise: Porsche, Mercedes-AMG, Lamborghini, Ferrari, Aston Martin, BMW and more.
- Japanese specials — JAF-GT and the low-cost “Mother Chassis” (a Dome-built common tub with a control engine), bodied to resemble road cars you won’t see racing anywhere else.3
4. The success ballast
This is Super GT’s signature idea — and the reason finishes are so close.
Cars carry added weight based on their championship points — roughly 2 kg per point, up to about 100 kg — which is then reduced for the final rounds so the title stays open. At higher handicaps the cars also get a fuel-flow restriction (and, new for 2026, a refuelling restrictor that lengthens pit stops). The effect: the team that’s been winning is dragged back toward the pack, so the championship rarely runs away.4
5. The 2026 season
The 2026 championship is 7 rounds, all in Japan — the fewest in years, after a planned overseas round at Sepang (Malaysia) was postponed and not replaced.5
| Round | Circuit | Date |
|---|---|---|
| Round 1 (opener) | Okayama | 11–12 Apr |
| Round 2 | Fuji Speedway (Golden Week) | 3–4 May |
| Round 3 | Fuji Speedway | 1–2 Aug |
| Round 4 | Suzuka | 22–23 Aug |
| Round 5 | Sportsland Sugo | 19–20 Sep |
| Round 6 | Autopolis | 17–18 Oct |
| Round 7 (finale) | Mobility Resort Motegi | 7–8 Nov |

Super Formula is single-seater sprint racing — one driver, lightweight open-wheelers. Super GT is closed-cockpit sportscars, two-driver crews, longer races with pit stops, plus a manufacturer-and-tyre war and the ballast equalizer. In spirit it’s closer to Le Mans or IMSA — even though the two series share engine architecture.6
6. How to watch from abroad
Here’s the honest part: international access is poor in 2026. The previous English-commentary platform (Motorsport.tv) shut down in January 2026, and there is no official free global live stream.7
- US & Canada: RACER+ holds the rights (around US$20/month).
- Japan: J Sports (not available abroad).
- Elsewhere: no official English live broadcast; the official Super GT YouTube channel carries highlights and previews, not full live races worldwide.
Super GT in five lines
- Japan’s top sportscar series — two classes (GT500 + GT300) racing together.
- GT500 = factory Toyota, Honda (new Prelude-GT) and Nissan, two drivers per car.
- GT300 mixes global GT3 cars with unique Japanese “Mother Chassis” specials.
- Success ballast weighs down the winners — so the field stays incredibly close.
- 2026 = 7 all-Japan rounds. ⚠ Watching abroad is hard; re-check streaming.
