Gamba Osaka: Treble Winners & Asian Champions
Gamba Osaka: Treble Winners & Asian Champions
Osaka’s blue half is one of Japanese football’s genuine heavyweights: a domestic treble, an Asian crown, a midfield legend for the ages, and one of the best football stadiums in Asia. This is Gamba Osaka.
Gamba Osaka are one of the J.League’s most decorated clubs. In 2014 they pulled off a domestic treble — J1 League, League Cup and Emperor’s Cup in a single season — and in 2008 they were crowned champions of Asia. They’re the long-time home of Yasuhito Endo, perhaps the model Japanese midfielder, and they play at the superb Panasonic Stadium Suita. With city rivals Cerezo, they contest the fierce Osaka Derby.

5. Why they matter
1. Who Gamba are
Osaka’s blue heavyweight.
Founded in 1980 as the company team of Matsushita Electric (now Panasonic), Gamba Osaka are one of the big clubs of the Kansai region. With city rivals Cerezo Osaka they share the passionate Osaka Derby, and across their history they’ve combined domestic silverware with continental success.1
2. Treble & Asian champions
Two achievements define Gamba’s standing:
| Year | Achievement |
|---|---|
| 2008 | AFC Champions League winners — beat Adelaide United 5–0 on aggregate |
| 2014 | Domestic treble: J1 League, League Cup & Emperor’s Cup — and all a year after promotion from J2 |
The 2014 treble — completed the season after winning the second division — is one of the great single-season feats in J.League history.1
3. The Endo era
No name is more tied to Gamba than Yasuhito Endo, who played roughly 790 competitive matches for the club across two decades (2001–2020). His passing range, game-reading and longevity made him a touchstone for a whole generation of Japanese midfielders — and the heartbeat of Gamba’s greatest years.1
4. Panasonic Stadium Suita
Since 2016, Gamba have played at the Panasonic Stadium Suita — a football-specific, ~39,700-seat ground in Suita, north of central Osaka, widely rated one of the best purpose-built football stadiums in Asia, with a roof that traps the noise. It’s a key stop on any Kansai football weekend.2
5. Why they matter
- They’re a true heavyweight. A treble and an Asian title put them among Japan’s elite.
- They gave Japan a midfield icon. Endo’s career is a model in itself.
- They’re a brilliant day out. A top stadium and a fierce city derby.
