Kashiwa Reysol: The J.League’s Storybook Champions
Kashiwa Reysol: The J.League’s Storybook Champions
In 2011 Kashiwa Reysol did something no Japanese club had ever done: win the top flight the very season after coming up from the second division. It remains one of the great fairytales in J.League history.
Kashiwa Reysol, from Kashiwa near Tokyo, authored one of the J.League’s most romantic stories. In 2010 they won the second division; in 2011, their first season straight back in the top flight, they won the J1 League title — the first club ever to win the second and top tiers back-to-back. Coached by Brazilian Nelsinho, that side earned a place at the 2011 FIFA Club World Cup. The club is Hitachi’s — and “Reysol” itself means “king of the sun.”

1. Who Reysol are
Hitachi’s club, with a sun-king’s name.
Kashiwa Reysol come from Kashiwa in Chiba, just outside Tokyo. They’re the football club of Hitachi — whose name means “rising sun” — and the name “Reysol” combines the Spanish rey (king) and sol (sun). Their home, the compact Sankyo Frontier Kashiwa Stadium (“Hitachidai”), is one of the most intense, close-to-the-action grounds in Japan.1
2. The 2011 storybook season
It’s the feat that defines the club. Having won the second-tier J2 in 2010 under Nelsinho Baptista, Kashiwa came straight up and won the J1 League in 2011 — becoming the first club ever to win Japan’s second and top divisions in consecutive seasons. With players like Hiroki Sakai and Leandro Domingues, it was a genuine worst-to-first fairytale.1
3. On the world stage
Champions of Japan, Kashiwa earned a place at the 2011 FIFA Club World Cup on home soil — the club’s one appearance on the global club stage, and a fitting cap to its fairytale year.1
