Japan’s Sports Calendar: When to See What (and the Big J.League Change)
Planning a sports trip to Japan? Here’s the year-round calendar — football, basketball, baseball, F1 and more — plus the historic 2026–27 switch that moves the J.League to an autumn–spring season.
Until now the J.League ran February–December, but from the 2026–27 season it switches to a European-style autumn–spring calendar. The 2026–27 J1 season is scheduled to run 7 Aug 2026 – 6 Jun 2027, with a winter break roughly mid-December to mid/late-February, bridged by a one-off 2026 “100 Year Vision League.” Around it sits a packed year: B.League (autumn–spring), NPB baseball (spring–autumn), the Japanese F1 GP at Suzuka, sumo’s six tournaments and more. ⚠ The new J.League dates are newly introduced and may shift — confirm before booking.

1. The J.League’s historic calendar change
The biggest scheduling change in the league’s history.
Since its first season in 1993, the J.League has played within a single calendar year, from late winter to early winter (roughly February to December).1 From the 2026–27 season that changes: the league moves to an autumn–spring calendar like Europe’s major leagues.2
The 2026–27 J1 season is scheduled to run from 7 August 2026 to 6 June 2027, with a winter break from around the second week of December until around the third week of February.3 ⚠ These dates are newly set and could be adjusted — always confirm the current fixtures before booking travel. To bridge the gap left by the old system, the league is staging one-off transitional competitions in early 2026, the J.League “100 Year Vision League.”4
Why do it? The league says the move aligns Japan with the international (European) calendar and its transfer windows, making it easier to sell and recruit players and for Japan’s overseas stars to meet national-team call-ups.2
2. Football, year-round
There is almost always a game worth seeing.
Beyond league weekends in J1, J2 and J3, the football year includes the knockout derbies, the Emperor’s Cup, the Levain Cup and continental nights in the AFC Champions League Elite. If you want the backstory of how it all fits together, start with how the J.League was built.
3. Other sports by season
Football is only part of the calendar.
Basketball (B.League): already runs an autumn–spring season, roughly October to May.5 Baseball (NPB): the regular season runs from late March to October, with the Climax Series play-offs and the Japan Series into November. Motorsport: the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka is a highlight (recent editions have run in spring) ⚠ date varies year to year, with Super Formula and Super GT seasons spread across spring to autumn. Sumo: six 15-day grand tournaments — January, May and September in Tokyo, March in Osaka, July in Nagoya and November in Fukuoka. School sport: the summer Kōshien baseball championship (August), the Winter Cup basketball finals (December) and the All-Japan High School Soccer Championship (December–January) are national events in their own right.
4. Best months to visit
When to come depends on what you want.
Autumn (Sep–Nov) is the best all-rounder: football, the baseball climax, the start of the basketball season and comfortable weather all overlap. Spring (Mar–Apr) brings the F1 Grand Prix, the new baseball season, the Tokyo Marathon and cherry blossom. Summer is for Kōshien drama but can be very hot, while winter belongs to basketball and the high-school finals. Whenever you come, pair a fixture with one of Japan’s great venues and a stop for stadium food.
