The quick version

Tokyo is one of the best places in Japan to watch football. The headline venue is Ajinomoto Stadium in Chofu, western Tokyo — the only ground that hosts two J.League clubs, FC Tokyo and Tokyo Verdy. The National Stadium (the 2021 Olympic stadium) stages marquee matches and finals, and several big clubs — Urawa, Kawasaki and Kashiwa among them — are a short train ride away. ⚠ Fixtures and kick-off times change — check before you travel.

1. The big picture

A world city with football on its doorstep.

Tokyo packs an unusual amount of top-level football into one metropolitan area.1 You can build a weekend around a city-centre fixture and still reach two or three other big clubs without leaving the region. ⚠ Confirm fixtures and access before you go.

2. The home of two clubs

The home of two clubs2クラブの本拠地

Ajinomoto Stadium in Chofu is the home of both FC Tokyo and Tokyo Verdy — the only J.League venue shared by two clubs — with a capacity of around 48,000.1 It’s about an hour from central Tokyo: take the Keio Line from Shinjuku to Tobitakyu Station, then walk roughly five minutes. On match days, buses also run from JR Chuo line stations such as Kichijoji and Mitaka.

3. Beyond the city centre

The National Stadium — the centrepiece of the 2021 Olympics — hosts big matches and cup finals in the heart of the city.1 And some of Japan’s biggest clubs sit just outside Tokyo: Urawa Red Diamonds in Saitama, Kawasaki Frontale in Kanagawa and Kashiwa Reysol in Chiba are all reachable by train, making a multi-match weekend very doable. ⚠ Always check the current fixture list and ticketing.

4. Why it’s worth it

  • It has a unique stadium. Ajinomoto hosts two J.League clubs.
  • It has the National Stadium. Marquee matches in the city centre.
  • It’s a hub. Big clubs in Saitama, Kanagawa and Chiba nearby.
